Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman will join countries around the world in marking Medical Laboratory Day tomorrow, 15 April 2026.
The occasion highlights the role of medical laboratories in supporting modern healthcare systems and recognizes the contribution of laboratory specialists to the health of individuals and society.
Dr. Hanan Salim Al Kindi, Director of the Central Public Health Laboratory at the Ministry of Health, said that the laboratory, inaugurated in January 2026, represents a strategic step reflecting Oman’s commitment to strengthening health security and improving the quality of healthcare services.
She explained that the laboratory plays a key role in supporting epidemiological surveillance and early warning systems by providing advanced capabilities for the rapid and accurate detection of infectious diseases and emerging health threats.
Dr. Hanan added that the Central Public Health Laboratory serves as a national and regional reference centre equipped with advanced technologies and aligned with international standards.
She noted that the laboratory contributes to standardising procedures and enhancing integration among health institutions in the Sultanate, while also providing a platform for scientific research and innovation and supporting epidemiological studies that inform health policies.
She further said that the laboratory focuses on developing national expertise through continuous training programmes and strengthening partnerships with international organisations, including the World Health Organization (WHO).
Dr. Hanan affirmed that the laboratory represents a long-term investment in community health and supports the sustainability of the healthcare system, highlighting Oman’s readiness to address health emergencies and maintain its position as a regional centre in public health.
For her part, Dalal Khamis Al Yahya’ee, a medical laboratory technician at the Central Public Health Laboratory, said that medical laboratories form an essential component of healthcare by providing accurate data for early diagnosis and monitoring of health conditions.
She added that laboratory results are a primary reference for physicians, with most medical decisions based on laboratory analyses, particularly in diagnosing chronic, infectious and blood-related diseases.
Dalal also noted that the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on laboratory professionals, increasing their level of preparedness and reinforcing their sense of responsibility.
She pointed to the role of technological developments, including artificial intelligence, in improving laboratory efficiency, enhancing accuracy, reducing human error and enabling the analysis of large volumes of samples in a short time.
