Oman medical team succeeds in treating fetus’s thyroid congenital deficiency

Muscat: A specialized medical team from the Royal Hospital and Al Nahda Hospital succeeded in conducting a complex operation on a fetus suffering from a tumour that led to congenital hypothyroidism during pregnancy.

The team comprised consultants, specialists and nursing staff from the two hospitals’ departments of obstetrics and gynaecology, intensive care for premature babies and ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat).

Dr. Shamsa Mohammed Al Hinai, Consultant in Embryology, Pregnancy and Childbirth at the Royal Hospital, told Oman News Agency (ONA) that the operation required the insertion of a ventilator tube after surgically pulling out the head.

She added the operation was scheduled and studied carefully, noting that, after birth, the newborn was transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU) where the baby showed stable signs of life.

Dr. Shamsa pointed out that the team followed up on the baby’s condition and performed TV and radiological scans to ensure the case’s diagnosis as congenital hypothyroidism.

She noted that the baby received appropriate treatment for about a month and was later discharged by the ICU in good condition, while the endocrinology department maintained regular follow-up of the condition.

For her part, Dr. Alia Yousef Al Mad’hani, Consultant in pregnancy and obstetrics and Director of the obstetrics and gynaecology department at the Royal Hospital, told ONA that three successful operations were conducted after this rare occurrence, thanks to the timely response and cooperation of Al Nahda Hospital’s ENT department.
