Oman: National Awareness Campaign on Climate Hazards, Tsunamis Kicks Off

Salalah: Activities of a national campaign to raise awareness of the risks of climate conditions and tsunamis began today at Sultan Qaboos Youth Complex for Culture and Entertainment in Salalah.

It is second leg in the campaign which covers all the wilayats of Dhofar Governorate and will continue until 7 October 2024. The opening ceremony was held under the auspices of HH Sayyid Marwan Turki Al Said, Governor of Dhofar.

The activities include field visits, meetings and seminars, a media awareness event, simulations of emergency scenarios and an awareness exhibition to showcase examples of adopting safe behaviour during adverse climatic conditions.

The campaign pursues a clear approach based on an action plan targeting different segments of society. It focuses on the speed of response and awareness about the early warning system designed to handle multiple risks. It also highlights individual and institutional readiness to mitigate the effects of emergency situations. It underscores the concept of community partnership in recovering from the effects of these situations.

The campaign is organized by the National Committee for Emergency Management in partnership with different departments. These include the Ministry of Information, the Civil Aviation Authority (represented by the National Multi Hazard Early Warning Centre Centre), the Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulance (ACDA), Dhofar Governorate, the Directorate General of Education, the Directorate General of Social Development in the Governorate and the Youth Centre.
