Oman participates in 2022 UN Biodiversity conference ( COP 15)

Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Environment Authority, is participating in the work of the second phase of the fifteenth Conference of the States Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, in Montreal, Canada, and it will continue until December 19.

The meeting discussed several topics, including: capacity building, technical and scientific cooperation, knowledge management, communication, planning, monitoring and reporting mechanisms.

The meeting also reviewed protected areas and other effective conservation measures based on nature, marine and coastal biodiversity, and invasive alien species, as well as sustainable wildlife management.

The Commission also participated in the Tenth Meeting of the States Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety.

The meeting discussed the implementation plan, the capacity building action plan for the Cartagena Protocol, the monitoring and reporting process, the operation and activities of the Biosafety Clearing-House, as well as the detection and identification of living modified organisms.

The Authority participated in the fourth meeting of the States Parties to the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit Sharing, which will last until December 19, in Montreal, Canada, where it discussed access to genetic resources and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from their use.

The meeting discussed measures to assist in capacity-building and capacity development, measures to raise awareness of the importance of genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge, digital sequence information on genetic resources, as well as specialized international instruments for access and benefit-sharing from the Pagoya Protocol.
