Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman advanced two places in the World Soft Power Index for 2022, which was recently issued by Brand Finance in London.
The Sultanate ranked 49th globally in this year’s index, compared to 51st place in last year’s index.
The results of the index, which was topped by the United States of America, were determined by a set of measures across seven areas: business and trade, governance, international relations, culture and heritage, media and communication, education and science, people, and values.
The term soft power was coined by the American politician Joseph Nye in 1990, and defines it as the ability to obtain desirable results through attraction rather than through coercion.
It states that there is an alternative foreign policy tool for states to gain the support of others. Instead of the traditional hard power approach, which relies on military and economic means, soft power, achieved through shared values and standards, can be used to attract rather than coerce states.
