Oman ranks 64 out of 163 countries in Global Peace Index 2022

Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman was ranked among the top five Arab countries in the Global Peace Index for the year 2022 , issued by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) in Switzerland yesterday.

The Sultanate ranked 64 globally, with a score of 1,889 points, and was ranked with Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan and the UAE as the best Arab country in the World Peace Index for the year 2022 .

Iceland topped the index, which includes 163 countries, followed by New Zealand, followed by Ireland, while Afghanistan came at the end of the ranking, followed by Yemen, followed by Syria, followed by Russia.

The report emphasized that peacefulness declines to lowest level in 15 years fuelled by post-COVID-19 economic uncertainty and Ukraine conflict.

The report said that the decline of terrorism continued to improve, as 70 countries did not record any attacks in 2021. This is the best result since 2008.

The report stated that the rise in costs has increased food insecurity and political instability globally, with Africa, South Asia and the Middle East being the greatest threat.

The report also emphasized that the economic cost of violence globally amounted to $ 16.5 trillion in 2021, equivalent to 10.9% of GDP, or $2,117 dollars per person.
