Muscat:  The Sultanate of Oman advanced seven positions in the 2026 World Press Freedom Index issued by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), ranking 127th globally compared to 134th in 2025.

This progress reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen the media environment and support responsible journalistic practice within a legal and institutional framework that safeguards freedom of opinion and expression.

The Basic Statute of the State affirms freedom of opinion and expression as a guaranteed right, exercised in accordance with the law and with due regard for public order and societal values. This framework supports a balanced media landscape that enables the exchange of views and reinforces the role of the press in promoting transparency and community engagement.

In recent years, the Sultanate of Oman has introduced legislative updates, including the Media Law and its executive regulations, aimed at regulating professional practice, enhancing transparency, and providing a clear legal environment for media institutions and journalists, in line with developments in the sector.

The World Press Freedom Index is a global indicator that measures media freedom across 180 countries and territories, based on criteria such as media pluralism, independence, legal frameworks, and the safety of journalists, in addition to political, economic, and social contexts.
