Oman strengthen its position in the field of sustainability: Kennedys

Muscat: The British Kennedys consultancy said in a report on its website, the renewable energy projects being implemented in the Sultanate of Oman strengthen its position in the field of sustainability.

In a new report published on its website said that the current Oman Sustainability Week constitutes a national platform, highlighting Oman’s commitment to leading sustainability, through innovative strategies, in line with the United Nations sustainable development goals, and promoting Oman as a new model for sustainable development.

The report noted that the event, which brings together sustainability experts, aims to help Oman transition to a low-carbon economy, given that the majority of Oman’s electricity is generated by burning crude oil (65%) and natural gas (35%).

The report stated that Oman’s National Energy Strategy has already set a target to extract 20% of its electricity needs from renewable energy sources by 2027, and the Sultanate is on the way to developing 2.66 gigawatts of renewable energy sources required to achieve this.

The report added that the Sultanate plans to do this, by relying mainly on solar photovoltaic energy, which represents about 79 percent of the capacity, and the rest comes from wind farms.

The report also said that a number of renewable energy projects are now underway in Oman. Including the Dhofar wind farm with a capacity of 50 megawatts, which is the first large-scale wind farm in the Sultanate, in addition to the solar power plant of the Petroleum Development Company of Oman, and the photovoltaic (PV) power plant with a capacity of 100 megawatts, which is the first solar power plant in the Sultanate. and a 500-megawatt solar photovoltaic plant located in Ibri, northwest of the Sultanate.
