Oman to ban all kinds of plastic shopping bags, issues time plan

The Environment Authority (EA) on Sunday issued Resolution No. 8/2024 banning the use of plastic shopping bags.

Muscat: Environment Authority (EA) issues a decision banning the use of all kinds of plastic shopping bags and a time plan.

Based on the Environmental Protection and Pollution Control Law issued by Royal Decree No. 114/2001, and Royal Decree No. 106/2020 establishing the Environment Authority, defining its powers and approving its organizational structure, and Ministerial Resolution No. 23/2020 regarding banning the use of single-use plastic shopping bags, and based on what Required by the public interest.

Article One

Companies, institutions and individuals are prohibited from using single-use plastic shopping bags whose thickness is less than (50) fifty micrometres.

Article Two

Without prejudice to the provisions of Article One of this decision, companies and institutions are prohibited from using plastic shopping bags of all types, in accordance with the time plan attached to this decision.

Individuals are also prohibited from using these bags as of the latest date specified in the time plan attached to this decision.

Article Three

Without prejudice to any more severe penalty stipulated in the aforementioned Environmental Protection and Pollution Control Law, an administrative fine of not less than (RO 50) fifty Omani Riyals and not exceeding (RO 1,000) one thousand Omani Riyals shall be imposed on anyone who violates the provisions of this decision.

The fine shall be doubled in the event of a repeat violation. In applying the provisions of this Article, committing a similar violation within one month from the date of imposition of the fine is considered a repetition.

Article Four

The aforementioned Ministerial Resolution No. 23/2020 is cancelled, as is everything that contravenes this decision, or conflicts with its provisions.

Article Five

This decision shall be published in the Official Gazette, and shall be effective from the day following the date of its publication.

– Selling the Mashakek.

– Mills.

– Selling honey.

– Selling dates.

– Selling and repairing water filters.

– Shops that sell and maintain water pumps.

– Shops that sell and maintain car pumps.

– Stores selling modern irrigation systems.

– Shops selling birds, fish, pets and related foods.

– Nurseries and selling agricultural supplies.

5 – Furniture, blankets, etc. stores.

– Dagger, gold and silverware stores.
