Obesity Awareness Week in Oman Highlights Rising Health Concerns

Muscat:  The activities of the National Obesity Awareness Week in the Sultanate of Oman will commence on 9 April.

The initiative aims to strengthen partnership between public and private sectors and expand care services for obesity patients through cardiometabolic clinics, patient support programmes and improved access to modern treatments.

Organised by the Oman Diabetes Association in cooperation with the National Diabetes and Endocrine Center, the week includes a range of activities, notably a community awareness event at Qurum Natural Park with participation from relevant entities.

The programme features a dialogue session addressing obesity-related challenges in Oman, alongside an educational exhibition showcasing the contributions of participating organisations.

It also includes a national virtual session on the risks of obesity, specialised workshops for healthcare professionals and a forum for pharmacists on the latest treatments.

Mobile campaigns for screening and early detection of obesity and related chronic diseases will also be conducted.

According to data from the 2025 National Survey by the Ministry of Health, the overweight rate in Oman reached 32.1 percent, while obesity stood at 32.7 percent, bringing the combined rate to 64.8 percent.

The data also shows variation between genders, with obesity rates at 39.3 percent among women and 26.4 percent among men.
