Omani Theatre Takes Center Stage at Muscat Nights

Theatrical Performances Enrich Cultural Scene at Muscat Nights 2026

Muscat:  The active presence of theatrical performances within the Muscat Nights 2026 festivities represents one of the most prominent cultural and entertainment pillars offered to the public, providing a dynamic platform for creativity, artistic exchange, and community engagement.

These performances create an ideal space for Omani theatre practitioners to exchange expertise, activate the performing arts in an engaging manner, and highlight vibrant youth talents, reflecting the cultural and artistic momentum currently witnessed in the Sultanate of Oman.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth has reinforced the role of Omani theatre troupes as creative platforms that contribute to spreading cultural awareness and enhancing interaction between artists and audiences across various artistic disciplines.

Sarah Mohammed Al Ajmi, Head of the Performing Arts Department at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, affirmed that Omani theatre is one of the most prominent features of the national cultural scene. She noted that its participation in Muscat Nights 2026 provides an expressive artistic space that reflects cultural identity while keeping pace with the local creative movement.

She explained that the inclusion of theatrical performances within the event’s general program reaffirms the role of theatre in promoting cultural awareness and making performing arts accessible to different segments of society. She added that the presence of Omani theatre aligns with a purposeful cultural vision aimed at showcasing national creative energies through an interactive platform that blends entertainment with knowledge.

Regarding the selection of participating performances and troupes, Al Ajmi clarified that the process was based on specific technical and organizational criteria, including the quality of scripts and performances, suitability for audiences, and the ability to deliver a rich theatrical experience consistent with the atmosphere of Muscat Nights 2026, while ensuring diversity in Omani theatrical representation.

She noted that the performances ranged from children’s theatre and comedy shows to productions by troupes for persons with disabilities, including two performances by the Creativity through Disability Theatre and the Oman Deaf Theatre troupe.

For his part, Jassim Mubarak Al Battashi, Head of the Muscat Folk Theatre Troupe, emphasized that theatre is an essential competitor among entertainment tools and one of the most effective cultural and artistic mediums. He noted that many countries rely on theatre to convey social messages with added cultural value, while also supporting national identity and tourism.

Al Battashi stressed the need for greater continuity and sustainability in Omani theatre, calling for year-round production rather than limiting activity to local and international competitions. He highlighted theatre’s potential as a source of national income and an effective cultural tourism tool.

Meanwhile, Yousef Mohammed Al Balushi, Head of the Mazoon Folk Theatre Troupe, described the participation of Omani and folk theatre troupes in national events as a significant cultural milestone, expressing hope for broader and more sustained inclusion to further nurture youth creativity.

Speaking about his experience at Muscat Nights 2026, Al Balushi described it as unique due to the direct interaction between performers and audiences. He praised the availability of integrated technical facilities, including lighting, sound systems, and stage design, which enhanced performance quality and allowed flexibility in responding to weather or technical challenges.

He concluded by highlighting the strong audience engagement with the comedy production presented by his troupe, noting that the performance combined entertainment with themes that resonated deeply with spectators.
