    • Oman’s EA completes first phase of National Biodiversity Survey project in Al Buraimi and Al Dhahirah Governorates

    Muscat: The preliminary field surveys of the National Biodiversity Survey project in Al Buraimi Governorate unveiled the existence of 11 species of birds, 3 species of wild mammals and 6 types of wild reptiles.

    The survey also tracked recent remains of 6 species of wild mammals, such as the wild and sand cat, the Arabian tahr (mammal) and the lynx.

    In Al Dhahirah Governorate, the survey points to the existence of 12 species of birds, two types of wild mammals, 3 types of reptiles, as well as footprints and remains of 4 species of wild mammals, such as the mountain fox and the wild rabbit.

    The National Biodiversity Survey project in the Sultanate of Oman aims to build a national database of species, especially wild mammals.

    The project seeks to document and update data about the animals’ areas of existence and the changes that occurred to them as a result of economic and urban activities. The project lays emphasis on providing access to accurate statistics for a census aimed to cover all types of medium and large wild mammals.
