EA to ‘plant 4 million wild tree seeds’ in Dhofar Governorate
Salalah: The Environment Authority, represented by the General Directorate of Environment in Dhofar Governorate, today carried out a campaign to plant 4 million wild tree seeds in the mountains of Dhofar Governorate for the fourth year in a row. The campaign continues until the end of this June with the participation of government and private agencies and the local community.
The campaign aims to raise vegetation cover and combat desertification in the Dhofar Governorate, as one million seeds of Sidr and Samar trees were planted in the states of Mirbat and Sadah, and another million seeds were planted for frankincense trees in the Jabal Samhan Nature Reserve. This phase will be followed by planting two million seeds in the mountains of the Dhofar Governorate at the end of next June in preparation for the fall season.
The planting phase was preceded by many efforts by specialists in the directorate, represented by collecting seeds according to the flowering seasons of wild trees throughout the year, followed by the stage of refining and preparing them for planting. A different method of planting was also devised for this campaign, which is creating a suitable environment for the seeds by mixing the seeds with the soil and some basic materials.
They are packaged in square-shaped molds, each square containing 3 seeds, and then dried so that the soil bonds with the other components to ensure the preservation of these seeds for as long as possible.
The seeds are then transported to the work sites and distributed in their appropriate and naturally protected environment. It is worth noting that this campaign comes to achieve one of the pillars of Oman Vision 2040 and focuses on the environment and its natural resources.
