Muscat: The Environment Authority organizes a workshop on “Traditional Practices in Arid Environments and Their Role in Combating Desertification and Protecting Ecosystems”, aiming to develop and raise Arab capabilities in the field of preserving natural resources in the Arab world, and it will last for two days.
The workshop seeks to learn about experiences and exchange experiences and information in the field of preserving traditional knowledge and practices, providing solutions to improve the living conditions of people affected by desertification, finding alternative means, as well as presenting proposals to improve and rationalize the use of natural resources to ensure their sustainability.
Sulaiman bin Nasser Al-Akhzami, Director General of Nature Conservation at the Environment Agency, stressed in his speech that the Sultanate of Oman realized early on the importance of addressing the phenomenon of desertification, and drew clear policies to address this phenomenon through the environmental objectives of the “Oman 2040” vision, explaining that the phenomenon of desertification, land degradation and drought is one of the main causes of desertification. The most prominent environmental challenges facing the countries of the world and the Arab countries in particular.
The episode included visual presentations that dealt with the most prominent traditional knowledge and practices related to the protection of natural resources in arid environments in the Arab countries, as well as studies and research on the phenomenon of desertification, land degradation and drought, and methods of their application in the Arab countries.
Representatives from the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO), the UNESCO Regional Office for Science in Cairo, and the Arab Center for the Study of Arid Zones and Dry Lands (ACSAD) participated in the seminar.
The seminar was sponsored by His Excellency Dr. Ahmed bin Nasser Al-Bahri, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources for Agriculture.
