Oman’s Heritage Sites Attract Over 117000 Visitors in 2023

Salalah: The number of visitors to the Land of Frankincense sites in the Al Baleed and Sumharam archaeological parks, the Wadi Dawka Natural Reserve, and the Wabar archaeological site in the Dhofar Governorate reached 107,268 visitors, while the number of visitors to the Taqah and Mirbat forts reached 10,288 visitors during the year 2023.

Rawas bin Hafeez Al-Rawas, Assistant Director General for Heritage and Tourism at the General Directorate of Heritage and Tourism in Dhofar Governorate, said that last year, Al Baleed Archaeological Park and the Land of Frankincense Museum received 61,974 visitors, while the number of visitors to Sumharam Archaeological Park reached 32,694 visitors, while the Wabar Archaeological Site received Al Shasr Building in the state of Thumrait: 12,600 visitors.

He added in a statement to the Oman News Agency that the number of visitors to the Fort of the Wilayat of Taqah in the same year reached 5,224 visitors, while the number of visitors to the Fort of the Wilayat of Mirbat reached 5,064 visitors, indicating that the total number of visitors to those archaeological and historical sites combined amounted to 117,556 visitors from inside and outside the country.

The General Directorate of Heritage and Tourism in Dhofar Governorate is working to develop the frankincense land sites in Al Baleed and Sumhuram archaeological parks, and the Wadi Dokah Natural Reserve, and provide them with service and aesthetic facilities, in addition to organizing a group of diverse activities and programs, including frankincense season events and holding a group of tourist experiences represented by pleasure boats and kayaks. Classic carriages, camel rides and live frankincense extraction demonstrations. It is worth noting that Al Baleed, Samharam, Wabar, and Wadi Douka are sites registered on the list of the World Heritage Committee of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) under the name of the Land of Frankincense sites.
