Oman’s MOH participates in World Obesity Day

Muscat: The Ministry of Health took part virtually in the World Obesity Day. Convened recently by the World Obesity Federation, and witnessed a wide participation worldwide.

HE.Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Al Saidi, Minister of Health participated with a recorded word where he affirmed that the increasing rates of obesity cases in Sultanate of Oman are currently the same in the different countries of the world. Al Saidi confirmed that obesity is one of the biggest challenges faced by Omani society members, and that more than half of them are overweight or obese, with a high increase especially among women and children, according to the latest survey carried out in 2008. He pointed out that Obesity increased the risk of diseases and health problems associated with chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and strokes, along with causing severity and deaths among Covid-19 patients.

The health minister added that the precautionary and preventive measures taken to reduce the spread of Covid-19 for the past period have resulted in inactivity, hence the incidence of obesity and overweight has increased. His Excellency suggested that the solution to creating change starts with the individuals and ending with governments and world countries by finding out social, preventive and education resolutions beyond health sector.
