Oman’s Royal Camel Corps Added to ICESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List

Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Royal Court Affairs, in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth and the Omani National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, succeeded in registering the Royal Camel Corps on the list of intangible cultural heritage of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO).

This announcement came during the Sultanate of Oman’s participation in the 11th meeting of the Heritage Committee in the Islamic World, which was held on 18-19 December 2023 at the ICESCO’s headquarters in the Moroccan capital, Rabat.

The registration of the Royal Camel Corps comes as the first Omani institution concerned with highlighting the best practices for safeguarding intangible cultural heritage represented by Camels and the social customs associated with them; This international recognition confirms the role of the Royal Camel Corps in preserving the intangible cultural heritage through the roles it plays in preserving the purebred Omani breeds, caring for camels, and showcasing this ancient cultural heritage.

The Royal Camel Corps organizes and practices activities related to camels by organizing the His Majesty the Sultan’s Camel Racing Cup, heritage festivals, and participating in various celebrations by presenting the camel showmanship skills and musical performances on their backs, in addition to its participation in conferences, exhibitions, and scientific seminars on camels in and out the Sultanate of Oman.
