Oman’s Royal Hospital conducts complex transplant of Heartbeat Regulator

Muscat: A specialized medical team from the Royal Hospital me with success in conducting a complex transplant of a heartbeat regulator for a patient who had been suffering a defect in electrical connection between the atria and the ventricles.

The open-heart surgery involved open heart surgery to replace the tricuspid value on the right atrium

Dr. Najeeb Zahran Al Rawahi, Senior Consultant, Interventional Electrocardiology at the National Cardiac Center, head of the team, told Oman News Agency (ONA) that the complex part of the operation was the insertion of the electrical lead (wire) into the left ventricle through the outlets of the coronary sinus. The 90-minutes surgery was conducted through a small conduit of not more than 5 centimeters, without resorting to full anesthesia.

Dr. Najeeb pointed out that, in most cases such operations are carried out by making an opening in chest under-full-scale anesthesia and by fixing the lead to the other wall of the heart.

The team that conducted the recent operation comprised physicians, nurses and technicians from the anesthesia, cardiac catheterization department at the National Centre and Cardiac surgery department at the Royal Hospital.
