OPAZ Launches Compliance and Environmental Legislation Forum

OPAZ Reviews Compliance Practices at Annual Environmental Legislation Forum

Muscat: The Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones (OPAZ) today launched the annual “Compliance and Environmental Legislation Forum”, a two-day event aimed at enhancing compliance standards across special economic zones, free zones and industrial cities under its supervision.

The forum seeks to reinforce the zones’ commitment to applying approved policies, regulations and legislation, while strengthening governance practices and ensuring alignment with national sustainability priorities.

The first day highlighted progress made toward achieving net-zero emissions in the Sultanate of Oman and underscored the importance of this national goal in supporting sustainable economic growth. Participants emphasized adherence to occupational health and safety requirements and the adoption of best practices in compliance and governance.

Sessions also reviewed the national registry of the Hazardous Substance Incident Response Sector affiliated with the Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulance.

Tomorrow’s programme includes visual presentations on environmental management experiences in the Special Economic Zone at Duqm. It will also feature a review of incident investigation procedures implemented by Madayn in industrial cities, as well as a model study on environmental performance in Sohar Free Zone.

The forum aims to strengthen awareness of legislation and policies, capitalize on shared strengths among the zones, and discuss mechanisms for developing plans and addressing challenges.

The event is attended by representatives from government units, special economic zones, free zones and industrial cities overseen by OPAZ.
