Over 336000 tons of fish landed by artisanal fishing in Oman by May 2023

Muscat: The total quantities of fish landed in the Sultanate of Oman by the end of June 2023 reached 336,810 tons, an increase of 4 percent over the same period in 2022 reached 324,04 tons.

The value of artisanal fishing amounted to OMR 177, 259 million, according to preliminary statistics issued by the National Center for Statistics and Information.

The statistics showed that the amount of commercial fishing amounted to 20,516 tons, while the amount landed in coastal fishing amounted to 2,930 tons.

The highest quantity of fish landed by artisanal fishing came in the Al Wusta Governorate, where it reached 135,935 tons, followed by the Governorate of South A’Sharqiyah with 101,179 tons, then Dhofar with 37,075 tons, North Al Batinah and South Al Batinah with 31,318 tons.

The amount of fish landed by artisanal fishing in the Governorate of Musandam amounted to 19,239 tons and in the Governorate of Muscat 12,064 tons.

The largest amount of fish landed by artisanal fishing came from small surface fish, as the quantity reached about 203,467 tons at the end of May 2023, compared to 174,837 tons at the end of May 2022, an increase of 16.4 percent.

The quantity of large surface fish caught by artisanal fishing decreased by 8.5 percent, to reach 74,203 tons at the end of May, compared to 81,123 tons at the end of May 2022.

The quantity of demersal fish caught by artisanal fishing at the end of May amounted to 51,804 tons, a decrease of 14.1 percent from the end of May 2022, when the quantity amounted to 60,276 tons. As for the quantities of sharks landed by artisanal fishing, they increased by 7.6 percent, to reach 2,075 tons by the end of May 2023, compared to 1,927 tons by the end of May 2022.

With regard to crustaceans and mollusks caught by artisanal fishing until the end of May 2023, 3,548 tons were downloaded, compared to 3,362 tons by the end of May 2022. The amount of other fish caught by artisanal fishing reached 1,714 tons.
