More than 483000 tons of fish landed by artisanal fishing in Oman

Muscat: The total quantity of fish landed by artisanal fishing in the Sultanate of Oman, till the end of September 2023, stood at 483,984 tons, reaching reaching a value of Ro 285,857,000, up by 19.5 percent, compared to the same period in 2022, when its total quantity was 405,013 tons, according to preliminary statistics issued by the National Center for Statistics and Information (NCSI).

The statistics also showed that the amount of fish landed at the end of September 2023 through commercial fishing reached 29,366 tons, while the quantity of fish landed through coastal fishing reached 3,565 tons.

The highest quantity of fish landed through artisanal fishing was recorded in the Governorate of Al Wusta, which reached 180,501 tons, followed by the South Al Sharqiyah Governorate with 146,517 tons.

The Governorates of North Al Batinah and South Al Batinah, recorded 54,902 tons, and the Governorate of Dhofar recorded 51,109 tons. The amount of fish landed by artisanal fishing in Musandam Governorate reached 28,419 tons, and Muscat recorded 22,536 tons.

The NCSI statistics also showed that the largest quantity of fish landed by artisanal fishing was for the type of small pelagic fish, reaching 267,712 tons by the end of September 2023.

Meanwhile, the quantity of large pelagic fish landed by artisanal fishing, at the end of September 2023 reached 119,149 tons, while the quantity of demersal fish reached 79,323 tons. Moreover, the number of sharks and rays landed by artisanal fishing stood at 4,873 tons at the end of September 2023.

Further, crustaceans and molluscs landed by artisanal fishing till the end of September 2023, reached 9,958 tons, which the quantity of other types of fish landed by artisanal fishing reached 2,970 tons.   -ONA
