Duqm:  The administration of the Special Economic Zone in Duqm continues to implement its plan to increase the green area in it to develop the lifestyle and add beauty by planting all roads in the region.

Abdullah Al-Alawi from the Afforestation and Gardens Department of the Special Economic Zone in Duqm confirmed that work is now underway to plant several vital sites, including main and service streets, as well as a number of parks using modern irrigation systems and optimum utilization of treated water.

He said in a statement that 100 percent of the project to plant 5,000 trees, which is targeted to be planted by the end of 2023, has been completed in the region, where more than 5,718 trees have been planted, while the area of ​​green areas has been increased to about 34,000 square metres, indicating The Authority has allocated two million and 393 thousand Omani riyals for afforestation.

Al-Alawi expected the green area in the region to increase in the middle of this year, 2024, to cover an area of ​​more than 50,000 square meters of diverse trees and soil covers that are compatible with the climatic conditions of the region. He revealed that in the second phase, the authority aims to plant approximately 5,000 trees, which work will begin between 2025 and 2026.

He explained that the agricultural nursery in Duqm, whose area is estimated at 5,000 square metres, is being operated to be a primary source for serving the region’s afforestation plan with plants that are compatible with the nature of the climate in Duqm. For agricultural experiments and an incubator for new types of plants and trees, the Duqm Special Economic Zone has also allocated part of the nursery to be operated and managed by one of the small and medium enterprises emerging in the field of afforestation, in an effort to involve and support the local community in developing Duqm.

Abdullah Al-Alawi stated that the administration of the Special Economic Zone in Duqm has allocated several investment lands for the purpose of establishing agricultural nurseries in the region, which will contribute significantly to the production of species suitable for the region’s environment and reduce the costs of implementing them in increasing the green area.

The General Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones, in cooperation with the Environment Agency, has also allocated one these lands are used to establish a wild plant propagation nursery under the management of the Environment Agency, and its services will extend to serve the initiative to plant 100,000 wild trees at the level of the Central Governorate and implement the national initiative to plant 10 million wild trees.
