The number of new cranes is 16, including 4 cranes for transporting containers from ships to the commercial berth with a capacity of up to 65 tons, and 12 gantry cranes with rubber tires with a carrying capacity of 41 tons. The government berth at Duqm Port is the first berth to be built for government agencies in Omani ports.

The length of the berth is 980 metres, and it is located in a distinctive location between the dry dock and the liquid and bulk berth and close to the commercial berth. It is one of the most important security facilities in the Port of Duqm and provides readiness to manage logistical operations for a number of government agencies.

In 2019, the superstructure of the government pier was completed, including buildings for a number of government agencies, employee housing, and administrative offices, with workshops for maintaining boats and equipment for ships and boats, and areas for logistical services. The project work also included: extending electricity, water, communications, sanitation, and firefighting networks and the construction of 4 pumps, channels for surface water drainage, water tanks, fencing of the government sidewalk, and construction of the main gates and security gates. The length of the roads that were implemented on the government sidewalk is about 2 kilometers and 7 meters in width. It includes main roads and internal roads with road lighting, installation of traffic lights, and provision of parking lots for vehicles of various types. While the liquid and bulk materials berth at Duqm Port is one of the giant projects that will change the investment map of Duqm to become a city exporting oil derivatives and green industries, the superstructure of the berth was constructed in two stages; The first phase was completed in 2019 and the second in the second quarter of 2020.

During the first phase of the pier’s infrastructure work, 79 hectares of the area adjacent to the 4.6 km long breakwater were developed and reclaimed for the construction of the liquid and bulk materials pier. The double pier berth was also constructed with accessories and marine navigation tools, and about 26 million cubic meters of material was excavated for deepening work. The basin was extended to 18 metres, and the port’s path channel leading to the pier was deepened to 19 metres. About 5 million cubic meters of these materials were used to reclaim and backfill the site designated for the pier. A one-kilometre-long pier wall was also constructed, and buoys and navigational aid devices were installed.

The second phase included increasing pier reclamation operations to include developing 55 hectares of the area adjacent to the breakwater, which made the pier ready for new companies to operate.

During 2019, the Duqm Port Company delivered the first phase to the Duqm Refinery Company, which worked on constructing its export facilities and establishing tanks, buildings and services related to the export of petroleum derivatives resulting from the refinery.

Reggie Vermeulen, CEO of the Port of Duqm, pointed out that the port played an active role in developing the cargo base it deals with. Especially the handling of containers related to the fish sector, including frozen and dry products, indicating that the port has succeeded in increasing the handling of general containers and the amount of metal exports of various types.

He added, that the port was able to attract new investors, especially in the fields related to green hydrogen and green iron, and there are new investments in the container terminal, represented in building new warehouses and offices and providing new cranes and other supporting equipment.

The Duqm Port administration was also keen to achieve many achievements to make the port a leading maritime and logistical center in the region. Its strategic location, world-class infrastructure, and focus on sustainable development attracted large investments, and in early 2023, the port signed industrial land reservation agreements with many leading companies in the field of green iron and green hydrogen.
