Real Madrid Fail to Reclaim La Liga Lead After 1–1 in Girona
Madrid: A second-half penalty from Kylian Mbappé secured a 1–1 draw for Real Madrid against Girona in a Spanish La Liga match held this evening, though the result marked a missed opportunity for Real Madrid to reclaim the top spot in the league standings.
Mbappé converted from the penalty spot in the 67th minute, sending a low shot past goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga after Vinícius Júnior was fouled inside the area by defender Hugo Rincón. The goal raised the French striker’s tally to 23 goals in 19 appearances this season, continuing his impressive scoring form following a four-goal performance in the UEFA Champions League midweek.
Despite the equalizer, Real Madrid were unable to break down Girona’s organized and disciplined defense. Girona, positioned just above the relegation zone, took the lead shortly before halftime when Azzedine Ounahi finished a swift counterattack with a powerful first-time strike into the top corner from the edge of the penalty box.
Real Madrid produced a lackluster first-half performance, registering only one shot on target. The team’s tempo improved in the second half as they adopted a more direct attacking approach, yet they struggled to find the decisive final touch.
The match also saw two Real Madrid goals disallowed—one by Mbappé for handball in the buildup, and another by Vinícius for offside.
The draw extends a recent run of mixed results for coach Xabi Alonso’s side, who have secured only one win in their last five matches across all competitions. Real Madrid now trail league leaders Barcelona by one point as the title race intensifies.
