Muscat:  The Sultanate of Oman continues to strengthen its efforts towards achieving net-zero emissions and promoting the green economy through projects and initiatives based on circular economy principles that contribute to reducing carbon emissions and supporting the sustainability of natural resources.

This direction is reflected in the implementation of projects aimed at recycling agricultural and animal waste and converting it into value-added products to enhance environmental and economic sustainability.

Agricultural and animal waste management represents one of the key sectors supporting the production of organic fertilizers, animal and fish feed, as well as environmentally friendly industrial products, including wood alternatives and decorative products made from palm fronds.

Zero Neutral Solutions is among the Omani companies specializing in developing environmental sustainability solutions through the use of organic materials and extracts that improve soil and support plant growth. The company also represents the “Oman PVC” project in the Wilayat of Ibra, the first factory in Oman specializing in recycling palm frond waste and converting it into sustainable materials for building and furniture products.

Eng. Ali bin Salem Fadel, Director of Operations at Oman Agriculture Development Company / Dhofar Fertilizers, said that the organic fertilizer plant in Raysut Industrial City in Salalah is one of the leading projects in recycling agricultural and animal waste.

He explained that the project, implemented in cooperation with “be’ah”, produces organic fertilizer from green agricultural waste with an annual production capacity of 25,000 tonnes.

He added that the project utilizes advanced technologies and integrated operational systems to process agricultural waste according to international standards, contributing to improving soil fertility, reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers and lowering methane emissions resulting from waste accumulation.

The project also focuses on utilizing palm fronds in the manufacture of decorative products and wood alternatives through modern industrial processes that reduce agricultural waste and limit the use of traditional wood.

In the field of animal feed, Dr. Fahd bin Mahfoudh Al Yahyaei, Head of the Animal Nutrition Research Department at the General Directorate of Agricultural and Animal Research, said that the project to develop integrated animal feed manufacturing technology from agricultural residues is part of the Food Security Laboratory projects.

He noted that the Omani Company for Biological Products has begun commercial production of animal feed at its factory in Khazaen Economic City using environmentally friendly local resources.

He explained that the technology relies on processing and mixing agricultural residues with nutritional components, including energy sources, proteins, vitamins and minerals, before converting them into feed pellets using modern technologies.

Dr. Al Yahyaei pointed out that initial studies showed positive results in meeting animal nutritional needs, improving growth and reducing feeding costs.

He added that experiments included goats and cows, while studies continue on dairy cows in cooperation with Sultan Qaboos University and on camels in cooperation with the Royal Camel Corps.

He affirmed that these initiatives support environmental sustainability, improve agricultural productivity, reduce the use of chemical inputs and contribute to enhancing investment opportunities in green industries.

He added that such projects support economic diversification and align with global trends towards a low-carbon economy.
