“Ain Ji” Spring in Sadh: A Freshwater Gem Just Metres from the Sea

“Ain Ji” Spring Showcases Unique Hydrogeological Phenomenon in Dhofar

Sadh: The Directorate General of Agricultural, Fisheries and Water Resources in Dhofar Governorate has completed maintenance and rehabilitation works on the “Ain Ji” freshwater spring in the Wilayat of Sadh, one of the governorate’s rare natural water sources. The project was implemented as part of efforts to preserve water resources and enhance their sustainability, in coordination with the Office of the Wali of Sadh.

“Ain Ji” is a unique freshwater spring located approximately 20 metres from the coastline, between the Hadbin area and the Niabat of Hasik. Despite its proximity to the sea, the spring remains unaffected by tides or high waves during the Khareef season, giving it exceptional environmental and hydrogeological characteristics within Dhofar Governorate.

His Excellency Dr. Ahmed bin Ali Al-Dura’i, Wali of Sadh, stated that the Wilayat’s office is currently implementing a supplementary phase of the project in coordination with the Sadh Municipality Services Center and a contracting company. This phase includes the establishment of parking areas adjacent to the spring, landscaping works, and the installation of directional and informational signage, all aimed at enhancing visitor experience and site accessibility.

His Excellency emphasized that these initiatives fall within future plans to develop the Wilayat’s tourism and environmental assets, preparing natural sites for organized public use while preserving their ecological value and sustainability.

For his part, Eng. Ali bin Bakhit Bait Saeed, Director of the Water Resources Department at the Directorate General, explained that the spring historically served as a primary water source for local residents and as a vital stop for abalone divers to replenish drinking water and water their livestock. He added that the spring also played an important role in supporting wildlife and rare animal species in the area.

Eng. Ali noted that “Ain Ji” represents a unique hydrogeological phenomenon, as its water originates from a deep underground aquifer within solid rock formations that act as a natural barrier against seawater intrusion. The hydraulic gradient between the aquifer and the discharge point ensures a continuous flow of freshwater and maintains the stability of its quality.

He explained that the rehabilitation works included cleaning the site and removing sediments and debris, restoring the basin floor, repairing damaged sections using reinforced concrete, and constructing stairways and walkways on the western side to ensure visitor safety. The works also involved building stone retaining walls and installing a drainage outlet.

It is worth noting that the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources carried out maintenance and rehabilitation works on 12 water springs across several wilayats in Dhofar Governorate during 2025, as part of its water resources sector plan. These efforts were supported by active community participation, which contributed significantly to preserving several natural springs.
