Royal Hospital succeeds in removing a rare 30cm tumor from abdominal cavity

Muscat: A specialized surgical team from the Royal Hospital conducted a 9-hour surgery during which it succeeded in removing a rare tumor from the abdominal cavity of a patient, followed by extensive chemotherapy to eliminate the remaining parts of the tumour.

Dr. Amid Khamis Al Araimi, Assistant Director General for Medical Affairs at the Royal Hospital, Consultant of Colon and General Surgery, told Oman News Agency that the tumor was engulfing many vital organs, including the right kidney, the right lobe of the liver, the inferior vena cava, the right common iliac artery and the muscles.

He said that the difficulty of the operation stemmed from its rare occurrence, making it a practice that requires high experience and precision.

Dr. Amid added that the challenges posed to the operating team included the large size of the tumour (30 x 30 cm), its complex location and its proximity to vital organs.

He said that the Royal Hospital values the expertise of its professionals and affirms its keenness to provide the best services to patients.

Dr. Amid credited the achievement to concerted efforts made by the team to prepare for the surgery in a manner that secures its success and averts any damage to the adjoining tissues or organs. He said that the patient was in stable condition and recuperating.

Prior to the operation, the patient was reportedly suffering from a solid swelling on the right side of the abdomen that was extending to the right side of the back region, said Dr. Amid, noting that this was accompanied by a partial intestinal obstruction, along with pain and weakness in the right leg due to the fact that tumour was spreading to the motor units of the right leg.
