Hydroponic Farming Project Enhances Vegetable Self-Sufficiency in Wilayat of Rustaq
Rustaq: The implementation of a hydroponic project for cultivating vegetables and leafy crops in the Wilayat of Rustaq, South Al Batinah Governorate, represents a pioneering scientific initiative aimed at utilizing limited home garden spaces and achieving self-sufficiency in fresh and healthy vegetables. The project aligns with national efforts to adopt modern agricultural techniques and promote environmental sustainability.
The project seeks to optimize the use of home garden spaces in an efficient and sustainable manner by employing hydroponic technology, which significantly reduces water consumption compared to traditional farming methods, while improving crop quality and increasing productivity.
As part of the project, a white, insect-proof mesh shade structure was installed within participating homes, covering an area of approximately 18 square meters (6 × 3 × 3 meters). A complete hydroponic system was also set up, consisting of a pyramid-shaped structure and two polystyrene pipes. Various vegetable crops were cultivated, including lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, bell peppers, and zucchini.
The implementation of the project enabled beneficiaries to acquire foundational knowledge of hydroponic farming, compare the quality of crops produced through hydroponics with those grown in soil, and gain practical skills in operating hydroponic systems and maintaining seedling health. The project successfully achieved self-sufficiency in the cultivated crops, reflecting its effectiveness in meeting household food needs.
In this regard, Khawla bint Salem Al-Harasiya, Head of the Rural Development Department at the Directorate General of Agricultural, Fisheries and Water Resources in South Al Batinah Governorate, affirmed that the project was implemented to empower beneficiaries with both knowledge and hands-on experience in hydroponic farming, while enhancing awareness of sustainable agricultural practices that positively impact family and community food security.
She added that the project serves as one of the models supporting rural women, and falls within the efforts of the Ministry of Agricultural Wealth, Fisheries and Water Resources to encourage innovative and sustainable agricultural solutions. She expressed hope that the initiative would contribute to spreading the culture of hydroponics and motivating communities to adopt it within home environments.
For her part, Ahlam bint Amer Al-Shakaili, a beneficiary of the project, expressed her satisfaction with the experience, stressing that hydroponic farming represents the future of food security, particularly in areas facing water scarcity or unsuitable soil conditions. She noted that the technology is well suited for achieving self-sufficiency for both small and large families, given its lower water consumption through a closed-loop recycling system.
Al-Shakaili pointed out that hydroponic systems can be implemented on rooftops, in narrow spaces, or even inside enclosed areas using artificial lighting. She also highlighted the rapid growth of plants, as nutrients are delivered directly without the need for soil, accelerating the production cycle.
She further emphasized the cleanliness and quality of hydroponic produce, noting the absence of soil-related pesticides. In conclusion, she underscored the importance of expanding the adoption of hydroponics to enhance self-sufficiency, strengthen food security, and mitigate the effects of global challenges and changes on local communities.
It is noteworthy that the project was implemented in the Wilayat of Rustaq in accordance with the support mechanisms adopted by the Ministry of Agricultural Wealth, Fisheries and Water Resources, as part of its efforts to support home-based agricultural projects and enhance community participation in achieving food security and agricultural sustainability.
