Muscat: A specialized medical team at the Sultan Qaboos Comprehensive Cancer Care and Research Centre (SQCCCRC) has succeeded in launching a new treatment service for prostate cancer patients using the radionuclide (lutetium-177) (Lu-177) PSMA, which will represent a valuable addition in the field of cancer treatment in the Sultanate of Oman.
The radionuclide treatment session for the first patient in the Department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine was crowned with success, as a dose of the radioactive substance (Lu-177) (PSMA) was given, which targets prostate cancer cells, which causes damage to the cancer cells, hinders their growth, and sometimes leads to the killing of active cells.
Dr. Kholoud bint Salem Al Riyami, head of the center’s nuclear medicine unit, explained that this service is the ideal therapeutic option for treating prostate cancer patients who suffer from widespread disease and have not responded to other treatments such as androgen deprivation therapy and chemotherapy.
She added that the goal of using this diagnostic and therapeutic service is to relieve symptoms and achieve maximum control over the spread of cancer and its treatment, taking into account the preservation of the integrity of the tissues surrounding the area targeted for treatment, and thus improving the patient’s quality of life.
She pointed out that providing this modern therapeutic service, which combines diagnosis and treatment by utilizing nuclear medicine techniques, is a qualitative leap and will open new horizons in cancer treatment, and that they are striving to provide more treatments based on (lutetium-177) in the near future for patients. Dr. Rashid bin Fouad Al-Sakiti, Head of the Center’s Radiology and Nuclear Medicine Department, said: Providing this service in the Sultanate of Oman represents an alternative option for patients to traveling abroad to receive this treatment.
He added: The existence of this service is an important milestone for the services provided by the Nuclear Medicine Unit and its integrated team of nuclear medicine doctors, nuclear medicine radiology technicians, medical physicists, oncology consultants, and the nursing team who work hand in hand to provide the best possible medical care for patients, which confirms the center’s continued commitment to Providing comprehensive care for cancer patients, providing the latest types of medical treatments, and promoting scientific innovations.
