SQU Forum Discusses Future of Voluntary Work in Oman

Sultan Qaboos University Hosts Forum on Sustainable Volunteer Work

Muscat: Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), in cooperation with the Ministry of Social Development, organized a forum today titled “The Future of Voluntary Work and Sustainable Impact in Light of Social Innovation.”

The forum was held under the auspices of Sheikh Rashid Ahmed Al Shamsi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Social Development for Family and Community Development.

The event aimed to highlight the role of innovation in developing voluntary work, equip volunteers and relevant institutions with modern tools to achieve sustainable impact, and strengthen cooperation between academic and community institutions to support an integrated volunteer system.

The forum also sought to explore the future of voluntary work amid social and technological changes and reinforce the concept of sustainable impact within volunteer initiatives and programmes.

The programme included two scientific sessions focusing on the future dimensions of voluntary work.

The first session, titled “Towards the Sustainability of Voluntary Work: Scientific Insights for Enhancing Long-Term Impact,” discussed mechanisms for building sustainable volunteer models and enhancing the effectiveness and continuity of community initiatives to achieve broader developmental outcomes.

The second session, titled “The Community Impact of Voluntary Initiatives: From Idea to Change,” highlighted the role of volunteer initiatives in promoting positive social change and transforming ideas into impactful projects that contribute to human development and quality of life.

The forum also featured an accompanying exhibition showcasing associations, volunteer initiatives and student groups from Sultan Qaboos University involved in community and voluntary work.

The forum was organized following recommendations issued by the Joint Committee between Sultan Qaboos University and the Ministry of Social Development regarding the importance of highlighting the impact of volunteer work and charitable initiatives in Omani society.

The opening ceremony was attended by HH Dr. Sayyid Fahd bin Al Julanda Al Said, Vice-Chancellor of Sultan Qaboos University, along with officials and specialists in the fields of voluntary work and community development.

The United Nations has designated 2026 as the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development, aimed at strengthening the role of volunteer work as a driver of sustainable development and supporting volunteers worldwide.
