SQU Hospital Introduces Advanced ECMO Patient Transfer Services

New ECMO Training Programme Enhances Critical Care Readiness in Oman

Muscat: Sultan Qaboos University Hospital in the Medical City has launched a specialized training programme for patient transfer using extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) technology, as part of efforts to enhance the readiness of the intensive care system and strengthen its capacity to manage highly complex critical cases across the Sultanate of Oman.

The programme provides integrated services for initiating ECMO support and safely transferring patients whose medical conditions require this advanced form of care. It ensures patients’ clinical stability throughout all transfer stages through the deployment of specialized medical teams and advanced technical equipment, in line with the highest international safety standards.

The initiative focuses on minimizing risks associated with transporting critically ill patients, improving survival rates, and enhancing the quality of care during critical and sensitive treatment phases.

The programme is implemented through multidisciplinary collaboration involving intensive care physicians, cardiothoracic surgeons, anaesthesiologists, as well as qualified nursing and technical staff. All operational procedures comply with internationally recognized ECMO standards.

ECMO-based patient transfer programmes are considered highly specialized medical services, available only at a limited number of advanced reference centres within the region.
