Muscat: The Sultan Haitham Chairs Programme in Oman’s higher education institutions stands as one of the most prominent national initiatives reviewed by the Board of Directors of the Research and Innovation Authority during its meeting chaired by HH Sayyid Theyazin bin Haitham Al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Authority.
This initiative, bearing the name of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, establishes a distinguished national research platform designed to address challenges through rigorous scientific methodology, supporting innovation and the development of a sustainable, knowledge-based economy in line with the aspirations of Oman Vision 2040.
The Sultan Haitham Chair for Advanced Technologies is the first chair to be launched under this ambitious programme. It aims to serve as a research platform for which Omani universities compete, transforming national challenges into innovation opportunities while laying the foundations for excellence through the development of practical solutions that serve various development sectors.
The designation of a chairs programme under His Majesty’s name reflects remarkable attention to the status of research and innovation on the national priorities ladder, affirming their qualitative role in guiding the economy and generating solutions, while enhancing specialised research and its effective linkage to Oman’s development needs.
The programme focuses on attracting the highest calibre of scientific expertise and building national capacities, alongside strengthening strategic partnerships locally and internationally to ensure knowledge transfer and technology localization. This approach aims to empower decision-makers to formulate evidence-based development policies, thereby contributing to raising the global ranking of Omani academic institutions and enhancing the Sultanate of Oman’s position in global innovation indicators.
The programme’s management adopts an integrated governance framework, including precise requirements for host institutions and high standards for selecting chairholders. Sustainable funding mechanisms ensure the continuity of scientific contribution, support for postgraduate students, and the provision of advisory services benefiting society and industry, ultimately maximizing the economic and social impact of research. In the domain of knowledge dissemination and exchange of expertise, the chair is committed to publishing outstanding scientific outputs and managing data and intellectual property in accordance with global best practices.
All activities of the programme are subject to rigorous periodic evaluation mechanisms that measure applied impact, including resulting patents and knowledge-based solutions that enrich the national economy with innovative products and services, thereby enhancing Oman’s global competitiveness.
