Muscat: Sultan Qaboos University celebrated International Arabic Language Day, represented by the Department of Arabic Language and Literature at the College of Arts and Social Sciences at the university.
Dr. Zahir bin Marhoon Al-Daoudi, Head of the Department of Arabic Language and Literature, gave a speech in which he pointed out that the Arabic language, on its international day on which the United Nations General Assembly resolution was issued – which is the eighteenth of December every year – is a lofty platform in which the impact of the Arabic language in shaping… Knowledge and literary arts, and their impact on society is reviewed.
There is no society without language and no language without society. In the same regard, he added that we all know that literary creativity in its various forms was not separated from language in every era. Writers employed language in their poetic, short-story, novel and theatrical creations.
Writers were able to highlight the impact of the word on the souls of the recipients, which helped to improve and advance the Arabic language. Literature, in its creative forms, contributed to preserving and advancing the Arabic language, revealing to different societies the life of the language and its ability to keep pace with various events and developments across time and space.
Dr. Zaher emphasized that the Arabic language is one of the richest living languages and has the deepest meaning by virtue of its various sciences and arts in rhetoric, grammar, morphology, lexicography, and semantics.
During the ceremony, which included speeches by the Arabic Language Department and the Arabic Language Group at the college, the audience listened to the experience of one of the basic education students with the classical Arabic language and his great love for reading. The event concluded with an Andalusian muwashah.
