Oman Conducts First Internal Lymphatic Duct Closure Surgery for Ear Disease

SQUH Achieves Medical Milestone with First Ear Surgery of Its Kind in Oman

Muscat (ONA: A surgery team from Sultan Qaboos University Hospital recently performed the Sultanate of Oman’s first surgical operation using internal lymphatic duct closure 0 technique to treat a disease (Ménière’s disease) in the ear of a patient. The step reflects the development of national capabilities in providing specialized healthcare in Oman.

The operation was run by Dr. Nasser bin Mohammed Al Tamami, Consultant Surgeon at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, University Medical City. It underlined integrated specialized expertise in providing advanced treatment options for cases that do not respond to traditional treatments.

This contributes to improving the quality of life of patients and spares them the need to travel abroad for treatment. Ménière’s disease is a chronic inner ear disorder that causes spontaneous and severe vertigo, fluctuating hearing loss, tinnitus and ear pressure. If left unattended, this disease may lead to partial or complete loss of hearing.

The success of the operation embodies an institutional approach to upgrade health services and enhance the integration of healthcare, diagnosis and therapeutic intervention. It also lends support to the educational and research environment that contributes to the localization of modern medical knowledge.

The achievement highlights the University Medical City’s efforts to develop an integrated healthcare model that combines clinical excellence, national capacity building and innovation towards the realization of a sustainable impact on community health.
