Oman Opens Seventh Session of UN Environment Assembly in Nairobi

Seventh UN Environment Assembly Begins in Nairobi Under Omani Chairmanship

Nairobi: The Sultanate of Oman today opened the proceedings of the Seventh Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7) under the theme “Advancing Sustainable Solutions for a Resilient Planet”.

The goal is to support the global environmental action track and activate multilateral efforts. The session was opened at the headquarters of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, chaired by Dr. Abdullah Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority and President of the current Assembly session. The event saw the participation of representatives of member states, international organizations, and global environmental bodies.

The Chairman of the Environment Authority affirmed in his opening address that the convening of this session represents a crucial moment in the history of joint environmental action, noting that the world today faces intertwined challenges related to climate change, the degradation of natural lands, and the exacerbation of pollution and waste.

He indicated in his speech that the Assembly will discuss several pivotal issues this week, most notably: resolutions and decisions, the Ministerial Declaration, the UNEP Medium-Term Strategy (2026–2029), in addition to the Program of Work and Budget for the period (2026–2027), which will form the general framework for environmental action in the coming years.

He concluded by stressing that the success of the session will be achieved through the adoption of implementing resolutions, a unified Ministerial Declaration, and the provision of necessary resources to enable UNEP to support countries in achieving tangible results.

The Sultanate of Oman’s presidency of UNEA-7 is a significant milestone in its environmental and diplomatic trajectory, and it reinforces its effective role in supporting international efforts aimed at protecting the environment and promoting the sustainability of the planet.
