The Directorate General of Agricultural, Fisheries and Water Resources in Dhofar Governorate has started implementing the first phase of the project to resettle turmeric cultivation in the governorate with the support of the Agricultural and Fisheries Development Fund.
In its first phase, the project targets 12 villages in four wilayats, Salalah, Taqa, Dhalkut and Rakhyut. It is hoped that 60 farmers will benefit from it to help them prepare the land, provide a modern irrigation system and follow up on its cultivation stages by the agricultural extension team.
The project aims to motivate and encourage farmers to localize the cultivation of turmeric in the Dhofar Governorate, as it is a unique crop with added value economically and for its health benefits and high demand for it locally and globally.
The project to localize turmeric cultivation in the Dhofar Governorate seeks to establish a genetic bank for this crop, in addition to establishing four fields for the production of turmeric “rhizomes” in partnership with farmers, and planting “7” acres in farmers’ fields in the targeted states during its first phase.
