Muscat: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resource (MAFWR) said the ban on catching “Kingfish” in the Sultanate of Oman for two months starts from today August 15, 2023.
In a statement MAFWR said: The ban period will last for two months starting from Tuesday 15 August end on October 15 in accordance with the provisions of Ministerial Resolution No. (230/2014), the ban aims to increase the Sultanate’s kingfish stocks and regulate fishing and avoid exhausting and depleting fisheries and reduce to achieve a balance within marine life to achieve sustainable fish development.
The Ministry urged all fishermen, transporters, companies and institutions who engaged in fishing, marketing and exporting kingfish to follow its directives and decision adhere , and to review the ministry’s departments in the wilayats to register the quantities of kingfish they have before the aforementioned ban period begins.
Kingfish will not be allowed to be traded or exported during this ban period unless it has been registered at the ministry’s department. The Ministry requests all concerned to cooperate in order to achieve the public interest and to avoid legal measures and penalties against violators.
It is noteworthy that the king fish is one of the large pelagic fish that belongs to the family (Scambridi) and is similar to tuna that migrates and breeds along the coasts of the Sultanate of Oman, and is in great demand in the local and international markets. It is one of the Omani table fish and is widely accepted by consumers due to its nutritional and health importance.
