Drone Strike Destroys UN Aid Truck Carrying Supplies in Darfur”

UN Aid Truck Hit by Drone in Sudan, Supplies Destroyed in Darfur

New York:  The United Nations (UN) has condemned an attack targeting a humanitarian aid truck in North Darfur State in western Sudan.

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said that the truck, which was carrying emergency shelter supplies for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), was struck by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) while passing through the town of Um Deryaseyah last Friday.

He added that the truck was en route to Tawila, where around 700,000 people have taken refuge after fleeing ongoing fighting in other parts of Sudan. The attack resulted in a fire that completely destroyed the humanitarian supplies.

Dujarric affirmed that UNHCR will continue efforts to reach displaced populations in Sudan, noting that nearly nine million people are internally displaced, while more than 860,000 have fled to neighboring countries.

He stressed that civilians and civilian infrastructure must not be targeted under any circumstances, calling on all parties to ensure safe and unhindered humanitarian access.

Meanwhile, a recent UN assessment highlighted worsening humanitarian conditions in displacement sites in Blue Nile State, citing overcrowding, inadequate shelter, poor sanitation and increasing risks of gender-based violence.
