New York: United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has established a dedicated task force to develop technical mechanisms aimed at addressing urgent humanitarian needs linked to the Strait of Hormuz and facilitating the flow of fertilizers and related raw materials.

The move comes amid concerns over potential disruptions to maritime trade through the strategic waterway and their impact on humanitarian conditions and global agricultural production.

UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric warned that any interruption to shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz could have serious consequences for humanitarian needs and farming output in the coming months, stressing the need for immediate action.

The task force will be led by Jorge Moreira da Silva, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of the United Nations Office for Project Services, and will include representatives from the UN Conference on Trade and Development, the International Maritime Organization, and the International Chamber of Commerce.

The initiative draws on existing UN frameworks and aims to support fertilizer trade while reducing humanitarian risks, in coordination with member states and in line with international legal frameworks.
