Muscat: Upto 3 years jail, OMR 3000 fine for spreading rumours on social media in Oman

In a statement Oman news agency said: The Public Prosecution issued a statement about what was monitored on social media platforms of the increasing frequency of abusive writings and sensational rumors and the publication of news that includes attributing criminal acts and attributing them to individuals or institutions.

The Public Prosecution confirms that publishing such news with the intention of stir up public opinion or for the purpose of spreading rumours is a crime punishable by imprisonment of up to (3) three years and a fine of (3,000) three thousand Omani riyals.Publishing on social media is not a way of reporting, and may affect investigation procedures.

The Public Prosecution also confirms that it will take all appropriate legal measures against anyone who commits such writings and rumors, or promotes, incites or assists them in any way, in accordance with the laws and regulations in force.
