UTAS Sohar Opens Advanced Technologies Lab Funded by Sohar Aluminum

Sohar: The University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS) in Sohar today inaugurated an Advanced Technologies Laboratory, funded by Sohar Aluminum Company, as part of efforts to support innovation and develop technical capabilities.

The laboratory provides a platform for applications in big data analysis, artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain technologies, in addition to supporting research in hybrid cloud computing, virtual reality and data science.

Dr. Hanifa Ahmed Al Qasmi, Assistant Vice Chancellor of UTAS Sohar, said that the facility offers an enabling environment for students and researchers to conduct experiments and advance innovation, noting that it contributes to aligning academic outcomes with the needs of industry and digital transformation.

She added that the laboratory reflects cooperation between the academic and industrial sectors in enhancing national competencies and supporting future skills development.

For his part, Ahmed Mohammed Al Kharousi, General Manager of Human Resources and Corporate Affairs at Sohar Aluminum, affirmed that the project underscores the company’s commitment to supporting education and technology as key pillars for sustainable development.

The laboratory aims to enable students, academics and industry stakeholders to benefit from advanced technological applications and strengthen research capabilities.

The opening ceremony was held under the auspices of Eng. Omar Hamdan Al Ismaili, Chief Executive Officer of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), and attended by Dr. Said Hamad Al Rubai’ee, Vice Chancellor of UTAS.
