Higher Education Institutions Advance AI Integration to Bridge Academia–Industry Gap

Al Musannah: Higher education institutions in the Sultanate of Oman have succeeded in formulating an integrated strategic vision aimed at bridging the gap between academic theory and industrial practice. This vision is being implemented through multiple practical tracks, including strengthening direct links between education and industry, addressing real-world challenges, and developing integrated training programs that build specialized skills aligned with immediate industrial requirements.

Graduation projects at universities and colleges have emerged as one of the most effective approaches for linking artificial intelligence (AI) with industrial and practical applications. These projects seek to translate academic knowledge into solutions for tangible challenges and hold strong potential to evolve into commercial opportunities, particularly in light of the growing national focus on innovation and digital transformation.

Such academic initiatives span various disciplines, with artificial intelligence taking a prominent role. Students are being equipped with advanced technical skills that meet labor market needs by transforming theoretical concepts into applicable tools that serve multiple sectors.

At the University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS) in Al Musannah, South Al Batinah Governorate, several graduation projects have demonstrated successful integration of AI into industrial and service-related applications. Among these is the project titled “Detecting Traffic Violations on University Campuses,” developed by students Khalsa Salem Al Maqbali, Sara Khalid Al Amri, and Nusaiba Suleiman Al Maqbali.

The project employs advanced AI technologies, including YOLOv8, Optical Character Recognition (OCR), and OpenCV-DNN. Developed as a prototype using the NVIDIA Jetson Nano platform, the system demonstrated high efficiency and strong real-time processing capabilities.

By utilizing cameras to monitor parking areas and internal roads, the system automatically counts vehicles and verifies compliance with parking regulations. In cases of violations—such as illegal parking or speeding—the system detects the incident, extracts license plate information, and issues an automatic fine.

This innovative project has gained international recognition and was recently presented at a conference organized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), highlighting the growing role of Omani higher education institutions in developing practical, technology-driven solutions that support national development and industrial innovation.
