Wasit Village in Al Buraimi Governorate… Heritage, tourism and agricultural diversity

Al Buraimi: The village of Wasit is one of the prominent villages in the Wadi Al Jizzi area in the Wilayat of Al Buraimi. It represents the eastern gate of the Wilayat, separating the Wilayats of Al Buraimi and Sohar. It is about 50 kilometres from the city centre and extends over a wide area, enhancing its geographical and strategic importance.

Wasit town is characterized by its touristic components that combine nature and the depth of heritage, as it extends over vast areas of agricultural land adorned with palm trees and various crops, which gives the town beautiful natural scenes that attract visitors. In addition, the quiet rural environment contributes to making it a favorite destination for rural tourism enthusiasts; as visitors can enjoy the beauty of the natural scenery and explore Wasit Valley, which is one of the most prominent tributaries of Al-Jizzi Valley with its running water and water pools, while the moderate climate throughout the year enhances the town’s attractiveness to be an ideal destination for families and tourists looking for tranquility in the lap of nature.

Sulaiman bin Ali Al Shamsi, a resident of Wasit village, said that the village is a popular agricultural profession, focusing mainly on palm cultivation, which is an essential part of the agricultural landscape in the region.

He stressed that palm cultivation contributes to supporting the local economy and meeting the needs of the population for dates, which are one of the main products in the village.

He added that the village grows a wide range of fruits and vegetables such as mangoes and citrus trees, in addition to grains and animal feed, indicating that the Wasit Falaj, which derives its flow from the waters of the Wasit Valley, plays a fundamental role in irrigating these crops and providing the water necessary for their growth, explaining that this agricultural diversity gives the Wasit village a special distinction among the neighboring villages, as these products contribute to achieving self-sufficiency for the residents of the region.

For his part, Humaid bin Rashid Al Zaidi, Director of the Department of Heritage and Tourism in Al Buraimi Governorate, said that the town contains the Wasit archaeological site, which is one of the most prominent historical sites rich in artifacts dating back to the second millennium BC. A group of unique pieces were found at this site, such as soapstone vessels, bronze arrowheads, in addition to swords, daggers, bronze blades and shell rings.

Al-Zaidi pointed out that the town includes five old neighborhoods: Al-Ghuwair neighborhood, Al-Mashab neighborhood, Al-Aqaba neighborhood, Al-Ghor neighborhood, and Al-Rayb neighborhood, in addition to five historical mosques: Al-Rashidat Mosque, Awlad Qalib Mosque, Bin Habib Mosque (Matrah Manea), Awlad Hilal Mosque, and Harat Al-Rayb Mosque. This historical site reflects the cultural richness that the town enjoys and its ancient heritage.
