Wheat Harvest Season Begins in Al Najd region

Al Najd Farms harvest around 246 tonnes of wheat

Thumrait: Farmers in the Najd region in the Dhofar Governorate began harvesting wheat for the 2023/2024 season, under the supervision of the General Directorate of Agricultural and Fisheries Wealth and Water Resources in the governorate in cooperation with the Agricultural and Fisheries Development Fund.

The cultivated area of ​​wheat reached about 7,200 acres with a growth rate estimated at 29 percent, and it is expected to achieve production of approximately 10,000  tons of wheat crop.

Eng. Saeed bin Muslim Al Kathiri, Director of the Department of Agricultural Wealth and Water Resources in Thumrait, said: The cultivated area this year in the Najd region amounted to about 7,200 acres, distributed among 82 farms, noting the participation of at least 6 agricultural harvesters to support farmers in the harvesting operations.

He explained that the Ministry of Agricultural Wealth, Fisheries and Water Resources, in cooperation with the Agricultural and Fisheries Development Fund, provided 30 tons of wheat seeds, subsidized by 50 percent, in addition to providing wheat harvesters for free, and facilitating the reception of wheat for farmers in cooperation with the Oman Flour Mills Company.

Al Kathiri stressed the importance of the wheat crop in the food security system, as it is considered one of the most important economic and strategic crops, indicating the Ministry’s efforts to improve its cultivation in the governorates of the Sultanate of Oman, including the Najd region in the Dhofar Governorate, which is considered one of the promising areas in wheat cultivation. Due to the presence of large agricultural areas and arable groundwater.

The Ministry of Agricultural Wealth, Fisheries and Water Resources provided a number of incentives to encourage farmers to expand the cultivation of the wheat crop, improve its quality and provide fortified seeds, most notably the varieties (Wadi Quriyat 110, 308, 226, 227, Jibreen, Kuli, Najd 1 and Najd 2).

It is noteworthy that the Ministry of Agricultural Wealth, Fisheries and Water Resources It was keen to spread and develop wheat cultivation by providing wheat seeds to farmers and equipment for harvesting wheat, in addition to providing agricultural guidance.
