Wood Sculpture Exhibition kicks off in Bait Al Zubair, Muscat

Muscat: The “Wooden Sculpture for Fine Arts Teachers in Al Dhahirah Governorate” exhibition opened today in Bait Al Zubair in Muscat Governorate, which is organized by the House in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and will continue until February 4.

The opening of the exhibition was sponsored by Her Excellency Dr. Madiha bint Ahmed Al Shaibaniyah, Minister of Education.

The exhibition contains more than 30 sculptural works between “the flat and the stereoscopic standing in the void”, and the techniques and artistic treatments for these works differed in proportion to the type of wood material.

The idea of ​​the exhibition is embodied in the inspiration of the Omani artist in various fields of plastic arts in order to use the vocabulary of the Omani environment, which is rich in many natural vocabulary, including wood, which is widely spread in various environments, and varies in terms of shapes, sizes and types, which opens broader horizons for studying it and knowing its characteristics to benefit from it in the field of Sculpture, whether flat or stereoscopic.

From this standpoint, the idea of ​​implementing a training program for plastic arts teachers came to enrich and empower their artistic expertise, and direct their thoughts to benefit from wood and employ it in the various plastic arts curricula and transfer it to students to enhance the use of the materials of the surrounding environment, and to produce works of art that carry many artistic values ​​and enhance positive aspects, including It deepens many educational concepts and values.

Various types of Omani wood were used during the training programme, including Sidr, Samar, Palm, Neem, Ghaf and other woods.

The ideas in which the works were implemented varied, combining the abstract and realistic character, and some of them dealt with Arabic calligraphy in order to suit the capabilities of wood, and among them employed Omani vocabulary and its achievements in applying sculpture on the surface to highlight the recessed and prominent, while most of the works took the “stereoscopic in the void” abstract character that In its aesthetics, it depends on highlighting the relationship between mass and emptiness.

The exhibition comes as a participation from the Fine Arts Unit to enhance the teachers’ productions through training programs and seminars in which they participate within the professional development plan for plastic arts teachers in Al Dhahirah Governorate.

The “Various Techniques in Wood Sculpture (1, 2)” program, which was implemented in Al Dhahirah Oasis Hall for Fine Arts, is considered one of the qualitative specialized programs in the subject of plastic arts, and through it more than 30 sculptural works were produced with various techniques and treatments for sculpture.

The duration of each program extended for 5 days, combining the theoretical and practical sides, and came out with various works that we will see in the wooden sculpture exhibition for plastic arts teachers in Al Dhahirah Governorate, which is the first of its kind in the Sultanate of Oman as a qualitative exhibition of wood carvings.
