Omani Translator Contributes to Global Literature Through Award-Winning Work

Omani Translation Enriches Arabic Library with Hisham Matar’s Latest Novel

Muscat: Omani translator Zuwaina Al-Tuwaih has reaffirmed the presence of Omani culture within the contemporary Arab translation movement through her Arabic translation of the novel My Friends, winner of the Orwell Prize for Literature and the latest work by the internationally acclaimed Libyan writer Hisham Matar. The Arabic edition was recently published by Dar Al-Shorouk in Cairo.

Al-Tuwaih’s contribution to this edition is evident in her ability to convey a literary text originally written in English into refined Arabic that faithfully reflects the author’s nuanced exploration of friendship, exile, loss of homeland, and unhealed memory. The translation demonstrates the advanced level reached by Omani translators in engaging with, analyzing, and re-presenting leading international literary works.

The novel narrates the story of three friends whose lives intersect in London, against the backdrop of the well-known 1984 shooting incident in front of the Libyan embassy, an event that deeply shaped the experiences of Libyans living abroad and left a lasting imprint on collective memory.

This publication represents a significant addition to the achievements of Omani translators and a valuable enrichment of the Arabic library, which today welcomes one of the most prominent literary works published in 2024, presented with a distinct Omani literary sensibility.
