Singapore: Gold prices edged lower today as the US dollar remained firm and investors awaited the outcome of the US Federal Reserve’s monetary policy meeting for indications on inflation and the future direction of interest rates.

Spot gold declined 0.1 percent to USD 4,021.87 per ounce, while US gold futures for August delivery fell 0.4 percent to USD 4,021.70 per ounce.

The Federal Reserve is widely expected to leave interest rates unchanged at the conclusion of its policy meeting later today.

Meanwhile, the Bank of England and the Bank of Japan are also expected to maintain current interest rates during their upcoming policy meetings on Thursday and Friday, respectively, while continuing to monitor inflationary pressures.

A stronger US dollar, which remained near a one-month high, increased the cost of dollar-denominated gold for holders of other currencies, weighing on demand.

Among other precious metals, spot silver rose 0.1 percent to USD 57.20 per ounce, platinum gained 0.1 percent to USD 1,605.96 per ounce, while palladium slipped 0.1 percent to USD 1,268.35 per ounce.
