China Floods Kill 12, Force Mass Evacuations Across Multiple Provinces

Beijing: Heavy rains and floods sweeping several regions of China have left at least 12 people dead and forced tens of thousands to evacuate, Chinese state media reported.

Chinese media said today that five people were killed and 11 others remained missing in Shimen County in Hunan Province following torrential rainfall. Rescue operations and search efforts for the missing are ongoing.

Xinhua News Agency reported that more than 19,000 people had been evacuated as of Tuesday evening. The county recorded 339 millimetres of rainfall within 24 hours until 7:00 a.m. Monday, while one township recorded 240 millimetres of rain within a few hours, marking record levels.

In neighbouring Hubei Province, floodwaters submerged streets and rescue teams used rubber boats to evacuate stranded residents. Some homes were flooded while others collapsed.

According to Xinhua, three people died and four others were reported missing in Hubei Province as of Tuesday morning.

In Guizhou Province in southwestern China, heavy rains and flooding left four people dead and five others missing. Homes were submerged, roads damaged and communications disrupted in several areas.

More than 3,700 people were evacuated from one of the affected areas in the province, Xinhua added.
