India Allows Limited Wheat Product Exports After Three-Year Ban

New Delhi: India has decided to allow the export of selected wheat products, easing restrictions that have been in place since May 2022, amid improved production prospects and ample domestic supply.

According to Bloomberg, the Indian government has approved the export of up to 500,000 tonnes of wheat flour and related products, including semolina, under a one-time exceptional quota, while maintaining the ban on exports of raw wheat.

The move comes amid rising global demand and ongoing trade discussions between India and the United States, reflecting New Delhi’s efforts to strike a balance between safeguarding domestic food security and capitalizing on international trade opportunities.

The temporary easing of restrictions is attributed to the strongest monsoon season in five years, which has bolstered confidence in the availability of local supply. The decision also responds to calls from the domestic milling and processing industry to benefit from external demand.
