India’s Tamil Nadu state has launched a scheme providing one-gram gold rings to eligible babies born in government hospitals and primary health centres.
Known as the “Thaimaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam”, or Maternal Uncle Gold Ring Scheme, the initiative was officially launched on Sunday, 28 September 2026. It is intended to celebrate childbirth, honour motherhood, encourage deliveries in government healthcare facilities and strengthen public confidence in state-run medical services.
The scheme also draws on the Tamil cultural tradition of the “thaimaman” — the maternal uncle — presenting gifts to welcome a newborn into the family.
The one-gram rings are made of 22-carat gold, with the gov’t procuring around 1.28 lakh rings for the initial rollout.
Eligible babies born in government healthcare facilities from 22 June 2026 onwards are covered by the programme.
